Every year, thousands of MBA aspirants write CAT, get a decent score, and still feel stuck — either because their score isn't high enough for IIMs, or because they feel limited to just one exam. The truth is, India's best non-IIM B-schools largely run on their own entrance exams — and the competition on those exams is often significantly lower than CAT.

👉 Key insight: XLRI, NMIMS Mumbai, and SIBM Pune are consistently ranked in India's top 10–15 MBA institutes. None of them require CAT. A smart non-CAT strategy can often land you a better college than a below-average CAT attempt.

How to Build a Non-CAT MBA Strategy

The key is to identify which combination of exams covers your target colleges — then prepare specifically for those:

  • Targeting Symbiosis (SIBM/SCMHRD): Focus exclusively on SNAP — 3 attempts, specific prep needed for speed on the unique format
  • Targeting NMIMS: Write NMAT — prepare for its specific section pattern (Language + Quant + Logical); up to 3 attempts
  • Targeting XLRI / SPJIMR: Write XAT — additional focus on the Decision Making section is essential
  • Mid-tier Maharashtra colleges: MAH-MBA CET is the smartest single exam — covers 300+ colleges with one registration
  • Broad coverage: CAT + SNAP + MAH-CET covers over 500 B-schools across all tiers
💡 FindUrCollege recommends: Don't put all eggs in CAT. Write 2–3 exams based on your target colleges. A focused SNAP or NMAT preparation is significantly less stressful than CAT and yields equally good (or better) colleges for many profiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which top MBA colleges don't require CAT?+
XLRI (uses XAT), NMIMS (uses NMAT), Symbiosis SIBM & SCMHRD (use SNAP), ISB (uses GMAT/GRE), JBIMS (uses MAH-MBA CET), TAPMI, GIM Goa, and hundreds more. All of these are NAAC/AACSB-accredited institutes with strong placement records — and none require CAT.
Is SNAP easier than CAT?+
Yes, SNAP is generally considered easier than CAT — fewer questions, shorter duration, simpler verbal section, and no non-MCQ questions. However, because Symbiosis institutes are highly desirable, competition is still high and cut-offs at SIBM Pune are demanding (97+ percentile). Preparation is still necessary — just a different preparation strategy than CAT.
Can I get direct MBA admission without any entrance exam?+
Yes, for some private PGDM institutes and university MBA programs. Direct admission based on academic profile and GD/PI is possible at several smaller AICTE-approved B-schools. This is suitable if your target is a local or regional MBA with manageable fees. For top 50 B-schools, an entrance exam is always required. Contact FindUrCollege for options matching your profile.
Is NMAT score valid for more than one year?+
No. NMAT scores are valid only for the admissions cycle in which they are taken. You cannot use a previous year's NMAT score for next year's NMIMS admission. The exam is held October–December, and the score is used for the immediately following admissions cycle (typically January–April of the next year).
What's the best MBA exam strategy for someone who scored 70 percentile in CAT?+
A 70 percentile CAT score opens doors to many good colleges (KJ Somaiya, WeSchool, BIMM, Indira). But you should also write MAH-MBA CET (March) and CMAT to maximise your Maharashtra and regional options. If you're willing to try again next year, supplementing with SNAP and NMAT in December gives you a parallel track to Symbiosis and NMIMS.
